How to Fill & Save Money

SAVE MONEY Filling Your Baskets

SAVE MONEY using backfilling panels

Backfilling panels create a separate compartment at the back of the cage. You can fill this area with cheaper material as long as it is 80mm+ so it doesn’t fall through the 75mm x 75mm mesh holes

PRO

  • Cheaper than using quarried stone
  • Reduces bulging
  • Enables machine filling
SAVE MONEY using rubble bags

Rubble sacks should be permeable and filled with larger, hard rubble that can drain water

PRO

  • Cheaper than using decorative stone
  • Prevents landfilling

CON

  • Not suitable for retaining walls
  • Not suitable for freestanding walls 1.5m+
FILLING GUIDANCE
HAND FILLING

Carefully pack stone against the wire mesh with the flatter sides of decorative rocks facing outward, ensuring a neat finish with minimal gaps.

PRO

  • Creates a neat, decorative front face
  • Tight packing to prevent bulging

CON

  • Labour-intensive and slower than machine filling
MACHINE FILLING

Tip the stone into the cage using a JCB. Add support poles and backfilling panels to reduce the likelihood of bulging. Hand filling is still required at intervals to fill in voids.

PRO

  • Quicker installation for large jobs

CON

  • Potential for increased voids
  • Increased chance of bulging

Questions & Answers

How are the bulk bags delivered, and will the lorry drop it in my back garden?

We deliver all bulk bags on a pallet using a tail-lift lorry. The driver will lower the pallet onto a flat, solid surface like your tarmac or concrete driveway using a manual pallet truck.

Please note that tail-lift lorries cannot crane or hiab the bulk bags over garden walls, fences, or across soft grass and gravel driveways. Delivery is strictly curbside or driveway offload.

How much do I actually need to buy?

The easiest way is to use our Gabion Stone Calculator. As a rule of thumb, 1x 850kg Bulk Bag equals roughly 0.6 m³ of volume.

That is enough to fill:

If you are filling a large wall, 1 cubic metre (1m³) requires roughly 1.6 to 1.8 bulk bags.

What size stone should I order for standard 75mm mesh cages?

Our stone is graded between 63mm and 200mm depending on the type (sieve size), with individual stones up to 250–300mm long, sized for 75mm mesh. Each bag includes some smaller stones; place these in the middle of the basket, not against the mesh. You need angular stone sized 80mm to 250mm. Because standard gabion baskets have a 75mm x 75mm mesh opening, any rock smaller than 75mm will slip through the wire gaps.

Why does my stone look dusty or grey in the bag?

It is freshly quarried. The process of taking the stone out of the earth creates dust that covers the rocks.

Don’t worry, once you’ve filled your baskets, give them a quick spray with your garden hose to wash off the dust and reveal the natural colour underneath.

Alternatively, the rain will wash it off naturally.

Can I just tip or shovel the stone straight into the cages?

Tipping stone straight from a wheelbarrow creates large empty pockets and puts uneven pressure on the wire joints.

For a neat, straight-edge finish, hand-pack the visible front face by placing the flatter sides of the rocks tight against the wire mesh. You can then fill the hidden middle area behind the front row using a tipping method.  Be careful not to cause too much shock against the mesh; otherwise, you may cause the wires to bulge.

Do I need a concrete foundation?

For standard garden retaining walls under 1.5m high, you do not need a poured concrete foundation.

Gabions are flexible, free-draining structures. Simply dig away loose topsoil down to firm ground, level the trench, and compact a 10mm–30mm sub-base of MOT Type 1 or hardcore to stop the heavy baskets settling unevenly over time.

Filling a large wall is expensive. Is there a way to save money on stone?

Yes. A popular cost-saving method used by trade builders is “Face-Packing”.

Hand-stack attractive rocks along the front face that people see, then place a Backfilling Panel inside the cage to separate the front face. You can then fill the hidden rear section with cheaper crushed concrete, bricks, or hardcore rubble. This cuts your decorative stone costs by up to 50%.
